The schistous soils, the steep slopes, and the harsh climate - hot in summer and freezing in winter - mean that the region does not at first glance appear to be fertile ground. A wine culture with more than 2,000 years of history proves just the opposite.
Located in northeastern Portugal, the Douro Demarcated Region was delimited in 1756, making it the first demarcated wine region in the world. Its territory develops along the Douro River basin, surrounded by mountains that give it particular climatic conditions, and extends over a total area of about 250,000 hectares.
In 2001, the Alto Douro Wine Region was considered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in the category of cultural landscape.
The Douro region is divided into three sub-regions - Baixo Corgo, Cima Corgo and Douro Superior - which differ essentially in climate and soil characteristics.
