The Straccali winery was founded in 1925 by Giulio Straccali, an expert oenologist, farmer, entrepreneur and wine producer with a big dream in the drawer: to let people discover through his wines the scents, colors and flavors of the Tuscan land.

Thanks to his work, the Castellina in Chianti farm immediately excelled among the most progressive and best organized in the area.

The History

A firm believer in the need to protect a wine as prized as Chianti, Giulio Straccali was one of the founding fathers of the Black Rooster Consortium, of which he was also vice president from 1942 to 1969, the year of his death.

In 1978 Italo Zingarelli, founder of Rocca delle Macìe, sharing Giulio's dream and driven by a far-sighted entrepreneurial spirit, bought the winery in Castellina in Chianti from the Straccali family. Since then Straccali has established itself for the great quality of its wines all over the world, and today, thanks to the Zingarelli family's constant commitment, it boasts an excellent selection of wines.

Our Philosophy

We can find many commonalities between Rocca delle Macìe and Straccali, first and foremost the strong collaboration and synergy between the family members of both the Zingarelli and Straccali families. Both companies are based on Tuscan traditions, trying to keep alive the idea of the winemaker as a cultivator of his land. Giulio Straccali already at the forefront in the 1940s, was famous not only for the way he made his wines, but also for his intense involvement in the dynamics of the Chianti area and his great contribution to the process of protecting the Chianti brand.

Giulio Straccali was one of the main founders of the Chianti Consortium (now the Chianti Classico Consortium) and now Sergio, president of the Chianti Classico Consortium, continues his work in this project, supported by Giulio from the very beginning. At the same time, Sergio continues to produce that particular Chianti beloved by Giulio in 1940.

The Vineyards and the Winery

The vineyards where the grapes for the production of Chianti Straccali are grown are located on the borders of the Chianti Classico area, mainly to the southwest and are included in the province of Siena. These vineyards are outside the Chianti Classico area, but Rocca delle Macìe's technical team manages them in the same way, with passion, care and the practices of sustainability . Instead, the vines predisposed to the prduction of Chianti Classico Straccali are mainly located near the village of San Casciano, where the soil is characterized by higher amounts of concrete, limestone and marine concrete, elegant tannins, and salty and fresh flavors. Alfio Auzzi, Rocca delle Macie's vineyard manager, takes care of said vineyards by following all the good pratihe regarding fertilization, treatments, soil tillage, new viticulture practices, etc.

Luca Francioni, Rocca delle Macìe's winemaker, is in charge of Straccali wines. He has never met Giulio, but from the beginning has followed his style in making the wines.

Straccali wines are presented as wines with strong roots and tied to the territory, with great drinkability and leaving a pleasant memory of the region in which they are produced.
