With medium acidity, herbal nuances, and hints of black currants and minerals, Camelias Verdejo offers a refined and subtle flavor profile that matures beautifully over time, making it a sophisticated addition to any wine collection.
The Verdejo grape variety is believed to have been introduced to Spain from Algaida, North Africa, during the 11th or 12th centuries, under the reign of Alfonso VI. Scientific research has established that the grape is a cross between Traminer (Savagnin) and Castellana Blanca. Rueda, the region with the largest Verdejo plantations in the world, is where this grape has found its ideal growing conditions, allowing the variety to thrive and develop its characteristic flavors.
Verdejo grapes are characterized by their medium-sized buds and a medium-length ripening period. The deep sandy soils of the Rueda region, which are highly resistant to phylloxera, provide an optimal environment for the growth of Verdejo. The grape is also highly resistant to drought and adapts well to less fertile rocky soils, making it a versatile and resilient variety.
Verdejo wines come in two distinct styles. The first is light wines, which offer herbaceous tones and refreshing fruit flavors, ready for immediate consumption. The second style is aged wines, which are stored in oak barrels to develop a more structured body and extra tones of almonds and honey. Wines labeled Rueda Verdejo are made with 85-100% Verdejo, while white blends from Rueda are typically blended with Sauvignon Blanc or Viura (Macabeo).
Camelias Verdejo pairs exceptionally well with a variety of dishes, making it a versatile and valuable addition to your wine collection. Its vibrant flavors complement white meats such as chicken and pork fillet, as well as vegetarian options like seitan and tofu. The wine's intensity also makes it an excellent choice for pairing with cheeses such as pecorino, manchego, feta, or halloumi. For a more adventurous culinary experience, try Camelias Verdejo with asparagus, avocado, mango, or coconut to create a unique and unforgettable flavor combination.
