In 1920, an Alentejo farmer from the Aljustrel area, Ernesto dos Santos Lança, fell in love with a property at the gates of Vidigueira and there he established the cradle of a family that would never leave the land. The Lança settled in Herdade Grande.
Were Vidigueira not one of the most emblematic wine-producing regions, the wine tradition was also cultivated in this family, starting with the inheritance of the production of the millennial Talha Wine, whose son Ernesto, named Eduardo, greatly appreciated and would come every year to elaborate.
In 1946, Eduardo Lança saw the birth of his most special harvest. His son, António, arrived. And António also continued his connection to the land and the estate, to the point of graduating in agronomic engineering and following in his father's footsteps, as an agronomist, viticulturist and cooperator of the Adega Cooperativa da Vidigueira.
António Lança, today the patriarch of the family and owner of Herdade Grande, took a deeper interest in viticulture in 1980, when he invested in planting new vineyards, redesigning a wine estate that would prove decisive for the quality and reputation that Herdade Grande has built in the wine sector.
After decades of production for the Adega Cooperativa da Vidigueira, his nonconformity led him, in 1997, to set up as a bottling producer and to place the first wine of the house on the market. This was a visionary step towards building what is one of Vidigueira's oldest family brands. On the label of these wines: Herdade Grande. And in the genesis, always the family. Now, as it celebrates its centenary at Herdade Grande, the family is now the fourth generation, in the person of daughter Mariana, also an agronomist with a master's degree in Viticulture and Oenology.
